The network build is part of Spectrum’s $5 billion Multi-Year Rural Digital Opportunities Fund (RDOF) investment in Rural Broadband
CADILLAC, Mich. — Spektri, the #1 rural internet provider in the country*, today announced the launch of Spectrum Internet, Mobile, TV and Voice services to more than 180 homes and small businesses in underserved or previously underserved parts of Cleveland, Kasson and Solon Townships, Michigan. Construction of Spectrum’s new fiber optic network in Leelanau County is part of the company’s approximately $5 billion RDOF-related investment in underserved rural communities, partially offset by $1.2 billion in the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) RDOF auction. .
The company’s RDOF expansion will provide broadband access to 1.3 million customer locations in 24 states in the coming years. Spectrum has also won more than $700 million in state subsidies for broadband expansion, which, combined with Spectrum’s investments, will connect an additional 300,000 homes and small businesses.
“Spectrum is bringing gigabit broadband to underserved communities in Michigan and across America through RDOF,” said Thomas Yates. Vice President of Construction leading Spectrum construction in Michigan and Indiana. “Our investment is making it possible to provide high-value broadband, mobile, TV and voice services now available in Leelanau County. We’re offering local residents and small businesses superior connectivity at very competitive prices, backed by a team of skilled local technicians and 100% US-based customer service.”
Broadband speeds of up to 1 Gbps, plus money-saving mobile options and 85,000 on-demand choices
Spectrum Internet offers speeds up to 1 Gbps and advanced WiFi for residential and small business customers, with starting speeds of 300 Mbps, with no modem fees, data caps or contracts. Spectrum Business Internet offers customers 1 Gbps download speeds, with 300 Mbps and 600 Mbps options. The company has also begun a network evolution that will provide gigabit upstream speeds and multiple gigabit download speeds across its 41-state service area.
“Bringing high-speed connectivity to Northern Michigan families remains a top priority for me. Thanks to the partnership between Charter and the FCC, high-speed Internet is reaching more homes and businesses that haven’t had a reliable connection,” said U.S. Representative Jack Bergman. “This is another great step in the right direction for those who call Northern Michigan home.”
The spectrum of the Internet exceeded advertised download and upload speeds for all tiers measured — even during peak weekday usage between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. — according to the FCC’s latest “Measuring America’s Fixed Broadband Broadband Ratio” released in January 2023.
“Broadband service can no longer be considered a luxury, especially in extremely remote areas like northern Michigan and Eastern UP,” said state Sen. John Damoose. “Spectrum’s latest expansion is providing broadband and Internet services to Leelanau County, and this type of infrastructure investment in rural Michigan is a boon to our small rural communities like Cleveland, Kasson and Solon Townships.”
“High-speed Internet access supports economic growth and educational opportunity – the two pillars of a healthy community,” said State Representative Betsy Coffia. “Spectrum’s announcement in Leelanau County means increased potential for Michigan families and businesses, including farmers who increasingly rely on broadband to grow our food.”
